Rules

The Game

  • Players line up at the back line. Game begins when the whistle is blown and teams are allowed to run up to the centerline to retrieve balls.
  • Two feet over the center line and the out-of-bounds line is considered an out. One foot over these lines is allowed.
  • Players are out if they:
    • are pegged by a dodgeball on the fly without it being caught
    • an opponent catches a throw on the fly or off a deflection
    • two feet over the centerline or out of bounds
    • attempt to block a ball with another ball and they drop the defending ball
Players cannot leave the court at any time and will be ruled out for exiting the sides of the court or going over the middle line with two feet. Players will be allowed one foot out of bounds and catches will be ruled official as long as one foot remains in bounds. Players may exit the court to make a catch only to save themselves (in cases when a ball bounces off their body out of the field of play). Players may go beyond the back line during play. Loose balls must be retrieved by players not currently active in a game.
  • Players can re-enter the game off a catch by a teammate. Player is considered live and eligible to be hit by opponents immediately upon entering the court.
  • Headshots and high throws are not tolerated. Teams will be given two warnings for throws deemed above an opponent's standing shoulder level, after which players will be ejected at the referee's discretion. (Note: Throws that strike a player's head while they are crouched or bent over are not considered headshots, and the player struck is considered out).
  • Referees make calls immediately based on their best judgment and without bias. All calls, regardless of any player's disagreement, are FINAL and WILL NOT BE OVERTURNED in any case. Therefore, there is to be no arguing of calls on the court during games. Teams who have an issue with a call may alert their captain or a designated team member who can bring up questions, concerns or comments to the referees IN BETWEEN GAMES ONLY. Referees may not be approached in game regarding calls, and distracting a referee may result in ejection for the game or, if continued, for the night. This rule is intended to avoid extended arguments between teams and help the night's games continue in an orderly fashion.
  • The only players allowed on the gym floor or bottom level of the gym are those whose teams are engaged in a game, who are substituting on a team that's playing, have been designated as a team's "ball retriever", or individuals approved by Party Dodgeball officials (example: photographer). Teams waiting for their game to begin must wait in the upper level of the gym or tunnel leading to the gym and wait to be called to play. All teams will be given ample time to warm up prior to their games. This rule is intended to avoid outside interference during games, and to make it easier for referees to control games and immediately recognize what players are engaged in a game.
  • All players will be held to a reasonable expectation of good sportsmanship with one another and the referees. Episodes of taunting, extensive argumentation, foul language and other infractions regarding as inflammatory or unsportsmanlike will result in ejection from individual games or for the night based on referee discretion.
  • The game is over when all members of a team are eliminated.

Playoffs

  • The rules above apply for playoffs
  • Each team must have at least 2 female players from its official roster present for all games. For each female player absent, a male player will be removed from the game. For example, if one female player cannot make the first game, NO MORE than 3 male players can be on the court at any time during that game, resulting in four total players for the team. If a team has no female players, they may only play with 2 male players for the duration of the game.

The Court

  • The dimensions for our court areas are as follows:
    • The court is divided into two 30' X 30' areas, for a total court length of 60' from endline to endline, and a total width of 30' from sideline to sideline.
  • Approximately 2'-3' is allotted for an out of bound area, allowing officials to move freely along the sidelines.
  • The Queue for each team is a 3' X 12' area, and should be located 2'-3' from the sideline, leaving enough room for bench players to move free along the sideline.
  • Every effort will be made to obtain the correct dimensions. However court size may be adjusted to best suit the available space.

Equipment

  • 6 regulation size balls will be used: 6 Blockers (8.5")

Players

  • Teams consist of 6 active players, with a minimum of 2 female players on the court at the start of a match. No more than 4 male team members are allowed on the court at one time.
  • All players must wear official Party Dodgeball t-shirt.

Substitutions

Substitutions must be made prior to the start of the game except on playoff night. No substitutions can be made during the course of a game, except in cases of injury.

Matches

A regulation match consists of a pre-determined odd number of games of a single game type. The number of games and/or the time allotted may be altered to best suit time and attendance. (In our case, that means 2 best of 3 matches per team.)

Game Type: Elimination Game

A game played until all opponents on one side have been eliminated. The first team to eliminate all its opponents is declared the winner.
